Needless to say, the gated community of Chatterwood Creek Glen Hills Dale Estates (that’s CGHDE, mind you) was a bit of a mixed bag. Still, every house was passably nice from the outside. The lawns were kept a brilliant lime green year-round, but the names of the chemicals responsible for such a thing had been stricken from the public record.

A mismatched grid of warring housing authorities patrolled the streets in armored golf carts. Let’s say you were an unwary traveler who lingered too long on Waylon Parkway or Hegel Court without a Mauer-Dinklage Silver Card. Without so much as a “freeze!” the guards would whip out their taggers and empty fourteen rounds in your sternum.

Granted, “taggers” were simple infrared guns, glorified TV remotes that wouldn’t hurt a fly. But when you got home to check your email, you’d have fourteen pending lawsuits.

Indeed, the only resident without fear of drive-by liens was a local thaumatronics billionaire: Tomasz Jones. Not only was Tomasz too rich to worry about these things, but he was also dead.

But let’s ignore Tomasz’s bloated corpse at the bottom of a nearby river for the moment—his mansion was downright sick. Hidden behind the bars of 1830 Finley Grove was a flowery neoclassical palace of columns and granite. Its pool came with its own fountain in the middle, girded by stone mermen with brass tridents. The untrimmed hedges at the bases of each window came with their own tiny ecosystems of colorful birds and bird-eating centipedes.

And more recently, its entrance came with its own one-legged elf, nervously hovering his forefinger over the doorbell.

Era’s heart was beating fast and hard enough to knock him a degree forward with every pulsation. A less distracted elf would have been concerned and called a doctor later. But none of that mattered now, for Gena was somewhere on the other side of the door.

So, what were Era’s oft-italicized thoughts to himself? Well, dear reader, I have some unfortunate news for you: we’ll have to be on the outside looking in for the rest of this chapter.

[Ned Caratacus - Mute Internal Monologue]

[Era’s thoughts are being kept to himself!]
